I went down the convent steps to the kitchen with the idea of meeting Sister Franca, the Italian cook for the Curia, and asking her for an interview with DSI. I was on the last step when she welcomed me with a glowing smile -- a cross between joyful and mocking as if to say, "I wonder what Patrizia wants now" She truly didn't expect my request. Obviously, faced with the immediacy of her presence, I forgot the words I had prepared. Instead, I asked her for an interview that we would like to publish. Her answer was, "And what do I have to say to others? Who would be interested? What can I tell?" I answered, "We all have something to say! And then we would like to publish it on our web site." She looked at me and asked, "Publish it where" I understood immediately that this would not be like other interviews we had done and that I would not be able to use the list of standard questions I had prepared. I also understood that this woman, Franca, was calling me back to a language that was simple, immediate, naked, disarming. I don?t hide the fact that I felt a bit uncomfortable when I sensed that I had been touched so deeply by her wisdom. Read more (pdf)
