USA, February 2009 - Caldwell Dominican Sister Carol J. Dempsey, O.P.,
Ph.D. celebrates herpromotion to
Professor of Theology (Biblical Studies) at the University of Portland,
effective June 1, 2009. The University criteria for this promotion states, «The
rank of Professor is reserved for those who are distinguished leaders in
teaching, scholarship and service and who thereby serve as role models for the
rest of the faculty and…for the entire University.»
In his letter of
appointment, Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C., University President,
commented, «In student evaluations, students acknowledge the rigor of your
courses, and the significant amount of reading and writing that is required in
your courses. To me, it is significant that you receive excellent course
evaluations from students while they at the same time indicate the high
workload and time spent in studying to succeed in your classes.» Sister Carol’s
recognition by her peers for her excellence in scholarship is indicated by
herappointment to the editorial board
of the Catholic Biblical
Quarterly and the invitation to
become a peer reviewer for the Journal of Catholic Higher Education by the Association of Catholic Colleges and
Universities. This prestigious honor was awarded because Sister Carol’s
«Academic excellence would be an invaluable resource to this publication.»
Sister Carol is the
author of numerous books and scholarly articles and plans to continue her work
in research and publishing even as she also looks forward to teaching next
semester’s biblical studies courses at the University.
